Dr. O'Connell is a clinical lecturer in the Division of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. He is a graduate of the University of Alberta, where he obtained his doctor of medicine and completed his residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery. Prior to moving to Edmonton he achieved his bachelor of science in zoology at the University of Calgary followed by his master of science in muscle physiology. Dr. O'Connell is the recipient of various awards including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Detweiler Traveling Fellowship, American Head and Neck Society Award for Excellence in Resident Research, Smith Kline Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching and the Most Professional Resident Award.
He returns to the University of Alberta at the completion of a head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive fellowship at the University of Washington. His current research interests are functional and survival outcomes in oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers, subjective and objective scar aesthetics in head and neck surgery, and improving efficiency in head and neck cancer care.
